Discover The Lower World, a unique sound installation in the Aquatunnel beneath the upper town in Luxembourg. Inspired by mermaids and mythology, this immersive work by Susan Philipsz invites you to explore a universe where sound and imagination merge. In partnership with MUDAM Luxembourg.

As part of the temporary open-air exhibition LUGA – Luxembourg Urban Garden 2025, Scottish artist Susan Philipsz (born in 1965 in Glasgow) is taking over the Aquatunnel in Luxembourg with a new sound installation created in collaboration with Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean. A specialist in installations that explore the emotional and sculptural dimensions of sound, Philipsz has created an immersive work entitled The Lower World for this unique underground space.
The 900-metre-long Aquatunnel connects the Petrusse Valley to the Pfaffenthal district, passing under the Upper Town. Originally built to collect sewage, it has been redeveloped for civil protection purposes. This particular context inspired the design of the installation, which draws on warning sounds as well as mythological narratives.The Lower World draws its inspiration from the Greek mythological Underworld – an underground kingdom populated by supernatural creatures and wandering souls – and creates a dialogue between ancient sirens, known for their enchanting song, and those of our time, who signal danger.
Added to this is a reinterpretation of the Luxembourg legend of Melusine, a freshwater nymph who appeared to Count Siegfried on the Bock promontory.Speakers installed at intervals along the tunnel broadcast this vocal composition recorded by the artist. The song of the sirens gradually fills the space, alternating between harmony, melancholy, dissonance and mystery. Like a rippling soundscape, the installation envelops visitors and invites them to perceive this underground urban environment in a different way.
‘With this work, I want to fill the Aquatunnel with sound, work with the peculiarities of the space and encourage visitors to reflect on their surroundings through a variety of associations,’ says Philipsz. Susan Philipsz lives and works in Berlin.

Dans le cadre de l’exposition plein air éphémère LUGA – Luxembourg Urban Garden 2025, l’artiste écossaise Susan Philipsz (née en 1965 à Glasgow) investit l’Aquatunnel de Luxembourg avec une œuvre sonore inédite, réalisée en collaboration avec le Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean. Spécialiste des installations qui explorent les dimensions émotionnelle et sculpturale du son, Philipsz a imaginé pour cet espace souterrain unique l’œuvre immersive The Lower World.
Long de 900 mètres, l’Aquatunnel relie la vallée de la Pétrusse au quartier du Pfaffenthal en passant sous la Ville Haute. Initialement construit pour la collecte des eaux usées, il a été réaménagé pour des fonctions de protection civile. Ce contexte particulier a inspiré la conception de l’installation, qui s’appuie sur les sonorités d’alerte, mais aussi sur des récits mythologiques. The Lower World puise son inspiration dans les Enfers de la mythologie grecque – un royaume souterrain peuplé de créatures surnaturelles et d’âmes errantes – et fait dialoguer les sirènes antiques, connues pour leur chant envoûtant, avec celles de notre époque, qui signalent le danger.
À cela s’ajoute une réinterprétation de la légende luxembourgeoise de Mélusine, nymphe des eaux douces, apparue au comte Sigefroi sur le promontoire du Bock.Des haut-parleurs installés à intervalles le long du tunnel diffusent cette composition vocale enregistrée par l’artiste. Le chant des sirènes emplit progressivement l’espace, alternant entre harmonie, mélancolie, dissonance et mystère. Tel un flux sonore ondulant, l’installation enveloppe les visiteurs et les invite à percevoir autrement cet environnement urbain souterrain.
« Avec cette œuvre, je souhaite remplir l’Aquatunnel de sons, travailler avec les particularités de l’espace et inciter les visiteurs à réfléchir à leur environnement par des associations multiples », explique l’artiste. Susan Philipsz vit et travaille à Berlin.

- Um vollständig in diese Klanginstallation einzutauchen, bitten wir Sie, den Tunnel in Stille zu betreten. Das feine Zusammenspiel von Klang und Umgebung soll einen Raum für intensives Hören, Nähe und Reflexion schaffen. Jegliche Geräusche könnten Ihr eigenes Erleben stören.
- Die Bodenoberfläche kann uneben, feucht und rutschig sein. Das Tragen von geeignetem Schuhwerk wird dringend empfohlen.
- Der Besuch ist für Personen mit Klaustrophobie nicht empfehlenswert.
- Nur Assistenzhunde sind erlaubt.
