Welcome to the land of the “Red Rocks”, the birthplace of mining in the south of Luxembourg.
The Ellergronn Nature and Forest Center is located 2 km south of Esch-sur-Alzette at the entrance to the Ellergronn Nature Reserve and is housed in the restored buildings of the former Cockerill mine. With its forester’s lodge, industrial sheds and forestry workshop, the center shares the site with the Cockerill mine agreement. It also offers a large parking lot and is certainly the best place to start your bike tour.
Description
The tour starts in a forest area, a former industrial site with remains of mining pits. On gravel roads you will cycle along the French border, where you will reach the village of Rumelange on paved bike paths. On this first stage you will be introduced to the century-old history of the mining region. Many industrial remains will accompany you during the first kilometers.
Once in Rumelange, we will change the landscape and enter the open pits, probably the most unexpected places you have ever seen in Luxembourg. Here you will have an impressive view of the former iron ore mining in Luxembourg. On the next stage, you will be confronted with impressive rocks that tell a story of hard-working mankind. An indispensable place for breathtaking photos.
After this first encounter, you will comfortably drive to Schifflange, where you will dive into the famous gorge of “Terres Rouges” known as Red Rocks. This popular spot offers a breathtaking backdrop on rocky ground where nature has reclaimed its roots. The scars of industry are still present decades later.
This tour requires a minimum of 4 participants to take place. Book your spot and in case of cancellation, you will receive a full refund.

Bienvenu dans la région des Terres Rouges (Red Rocks) – le berceau minier du sud du Luxembourg.
Situé à 2 km au sud d’Esch-sur-Alzette et à l’entrée de la réserve naturelle d’Ellergronn, le centre nature et forêt d’Ellergronn est installé dans les bâtiments restaurés de l’ancienne mine Cockerill. Avec sa maison forestière, ses halles industrielles et son atelier forestier, le centre partage le site avec l’Entente Mine Cockerill. Il offre également un grand espace de stationnement et est certainement le meilleur endroit pour commencer votre randonnée à vélo.
Description du tour
Le circuit commence dans une zone forestière, un ancien site industriel avec des vestiges de bosquets miniers. Sur des routes de gravier, vous longerez la frontière française, où vous emprunterez des pistes cyclables pavées pour atteindre le village de Rumelange. Dans cette première partie, le circuit dévoile une histoire centenaire de la région minière. De nombreux vestiges industriels surgiront et vous guideront tout au long des premiers kilomètres.
Une fois arrivés à Rumelange, nous changeons de décor pour entrer dans les mines à ciel ouvert, probablement les endroits les plus inattendus que vous ayez jamais vus au Luxembourg. Le lieu révèle une vue impressionnante sur l’ancien secteur d’extraction du minerai de fer du Luxembourg. En passant à l’étape suivante, vous serez confrontés à d’impressionnantes falaises rocheuses qui racontent l’histoire d’une humanité laborieuse. Un endroit à ne pas manquer pour prendre de superbes photos.
Après cette première rencontre, vous vous dirigerez confortablement vers Schifflange où vous plongerez dans les célèbres Terres Rouges, également connu sous le nom de “Red Rocks”. Ce lieu adoré offre un paysage à couper le souffle sur des sols rocheux, où la nature reprend ses racines. Les cicatrices industrielles sont encore présentes des décennies plus tard.

Das Natur- und Waldzentrum Ellergronn liegt 2 km südlich von Esch-sur-Alzette am Eingang zum Naturschutzgebiet Ellergronn und ist in den restaurierten Gebäuden der ehemaligen Grube Cockerill untergebracht. Mit seinem Forsthaus, den Industriehallen und der Forstwerkstatt teilt sich das Zentrum das Gelände mit der Cockerill-Minenabkommens. Es bietet auch einen großen Parkplatz und ist sicher der beste Ort, um Ihre Radtour zu beginnen.
Beschreibung
Die Tour beginnt in einem Waldgebiet, einem ehemaligen Industriestandort mit Überresten von Bergbaugruben. Auf Schotterstraßen radeln Sie entlang der französischen Grenze, wo Sie auf asphaltierten Radwegen das Dorf Rumelange erreichen. Auf dieser ersten Etappe wird Ihnen die hundertjährige Geschichte der Bergbauregion näher gebracht. Viele industrielle Überreste werden Sie auf den ersten Kilometern begleiten.
In Rumelange angekommen, wechseln wir die Landschaft und betreten die Tagebaue, wahrscheinlich die unerwartesten Orte, die Sie je in Luxemburg gesehen haben. Hier bietet sich ein beeindruckender Blick auf den ehemaligen Eisenerzabbau in Luxemburg. Auf der nächsten Etappe werden Sie mit beeindruckenden Felsen konfrontiert, die eine Geschichte der hart arbeitenden Menschheit erzählen. Ein unverzichtbarer Ort für atemberaubende Fotos.
Nach dieser ersten Begegnung fahren Sie bequem nach Schifflange, wo Sie in die berühmte Schlucht der Terres Rouges, auch bekannt als “Rote Erde”, eintauchen werden. Dieser beliebte Ort bietet eine atemberaubende Kulisse auf felsigem Boden, wo sich die Natur ihre Wurzeln zurückerobert hat. Die Narben der Industrie sind auch nach Jahrzehnten noch präsent.
